El Milagro/The Miracle Lutheran Church (ELCA)

3751 17th Avenue South
Minneapolis MN 55407

El Milagro began in 2001 as a merger between two churches: St. Luke’s, a 110-year-old Euro-American, English-speaking congregation and Todos Los Santos, a ten-year-old Latin-American, Spanish-speaking congregation. While Todos Los Santos was experiencing rapid growth and was quickly becoming too large for its space, St. Luke’s was facing the opposite problem: unused space that was a financial burden to maintain because of declining participation. Both congregations democratically voted for to merge as a solution to their problems.

Antonio Machado, one of the pastors that guided the church through the merger, explained to parishioners that being a part of a bicultural congregation would inevitably involve obstacles: “All of you who are interested in being part of this congregation, you need to know that chaos will be present. You need to know that we are trying different things because the old ways of doing things just were not working” (Parish Detail: El Milagro). El Milagro is an example of one possible solution to the simultaneous growth and decline of different Lutheran congregations. As a church that combines two different demographics, El Milagro presents the unlikely juxtaposition of the old and the new, the Scandinavian and the Latino, and the piano and the congas, to attract visitors.

Music forms the most memorable and audible aspect of “difference” within El Milagro. As a result of the merger, St. Luke’s music changed dramatically; the sounds of Latin American pop styles now emanate from the church on Sunday mornings. Jim Seller, bassist at El Milagro, and a member of Todos Los Santos before the merger, observes, “ Todos Los Santos dominates the musical feel” (Seller 2004). One of the recordings that best exemplifies the church’s stratified heritage is Dar Helig/You are Holy/Eres Santo, a worship tune that starts in Swedish, moves to English, and is eventually sung in Spanish, tracing the congregation’s linguistic past.
